In 1975, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) began their mission of "the identification, protection and preservation of cultural and natural heritage around the world considered to be of outstanding value to humanity.” Today, there are over 1,000 around the world, with over 25 of them in the UK.
