Liverpool: get to know the 67th Eurovision host city
The 2023 Eurovision Song Contest Grand Final kicks off in Liverpool this Saturday
© Getty Images
With an 800-year history, Liverpool has come a long way since it was officially named a city in 1207. Traditionally known for its influential port, Liverpool once traded goods around the world. Since then, the city has become beloved for its rich culture and passion for soccer (aka football). There are two top soccer teams located here, both boasting a strong reputation around the world. You may also have heard of the city's most famous musical export: The Beatles!
Famed for its musical heritage, it's a fitting tribute that the city has been chosen to host the Eurovision Song Contest in 2023. The famed international music competition features one act from each participating country (mainly European countries but not exclusively). The victorious country goes on to host the competition the following year, but in 2022, Ukraine's Kalush Orchestra were named the winners. Given the ongoing war in Ukraine, it was decided that another country would host on their behalf, with the UK being a strong contender. In October, it was announced that Liverpool would be the host city for the Eurovision Song Contest 2023. “We want to put on a show that Ukraine would be proud of, and we have been working closely with Liverpool’s sister city of Odesa to ensure that this is their event as much as our own," said Steve Rotheram, Mayor of Liverpool.
So far, the Brits are doing a bang-up job! This year's contest is hosted by British natives Alesha Dixon and Hannah Waddingham, along with Ukrainian rock star Julia Sanina. The spectacle is taking place at the impressive M&S Bank Arena at Liverpool's Pier Head.
