A United Airlines flight out of Newark that was heading for Spain was forced to return mid-flight on May 30 after a Fitbit device named "bomb" appeared on available Bluetooth devices, according to officials and sources. It was later discovered that the Fitbit belonged to a 16-year-old.
Other passengers reported that the aircraft crew repeatedly requested everyone on board turn off their devices. The pilot indicated that the Fitbit owner would be arrested. Upon the aircraft's return to Newark, passengers were required to evacuate as Port Authority police swept the plane.
The teenager has not been hit with any local charges. However, the FBI is currently investigating the matter.
