Dangerous destinations

Five Italian divers have died in what authorities believe is the worst diving accident in the Maldives’ history. The group disappeared on May 14 while exploring underwater caves about 50 meters (164 feet) deep near Vaavu Atoll, around 100 kilometers (62 miles) south of the capital, Malé.

Among the victims were University of Genoa ecology professor Monica Montefalcone, her daughter Giorgia Sommacal, two marine researchers, and diving instructor Gianluca Benedetti. Officials said rough weather conditions complicated the high-risk recovery operation, with military divers locating one body about 60 meters (197 feet) underwater while searching for the others.

The Maldives is renowned for its crystal-clear waters and coral reefs, and accidents are relatively rare, attracting thrill-seeking tourists from around the world. But while some travelers chase adventure, dangerous attractions can quickly turn deadly—even for experienced explorers.
