Once an important place of worship for both Christians and Muslims, the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul was built in 537 BCE as an Eastern Orthodox cathedral. It was later converted into a mosque in 1453, and served as such until 1931. In 1935, the building was secularized and became a museum.
