Toxic fumes are increasingly leaking into airplanes, this according to a Wall Street Journal report released on September 13.

Since 2010, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has logged thousands of so-called “fume events,” incidents where hazardous air from jet engines enters the cockpit and cabin of commercial aircraft, according to the report. Most modern planes rely on a system known as “bleed air,” which channels air through the engine. But as protective seals wear down over time, harmful chemicals are released into the air that pose severe health risks for passengers and crew.

Despite these risks, flying has become a normal part of our everyday lives in the last few decades, even though it's estimated that only 11% of the global population has ever been on an airplane. But whether you’re a seasoned traveler or stepping onto a plane for the first time, knowing some fascinating airplane facts can make your next flight safer and more enjoyable.
