Barcelona’s Sagrada Família has reached its final height after 144 years of construction, with the installation of a cross atop the central Tower of Jesus Christ. The basilica now stands at 566 feet (172 meters), making it the tallest church in the world.

The final tower is set to be inaugurated this week, with Pope Leo XIV expected to lead a Solemn Mass and ceremonial blessing on June 10. The milestone also marks 100 years since the death of Antoni Gaudí, the visionary architect behind the basilica’s extraordinary design.

Although the main structure is now complete, work is not entirely finished. Interior details and the long-debated Glory Facade still remain, while a proposed staircase has sparked concern among nearby residents who fear homes could be affected.

After more than a century of delays caused by war, funding problems, lost plans, and technical challenges, the Sagrada Família is finally nearing completion. Click through this gallery to take a trip through the Spanish church’s history and hallways.
