Statues

A provocative statue depicting President Donald Trump and late financier Jeffrey Epstein as characters from the film ‘Titanic’ (1997) appeared on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., on March 10. The installation recreates the iconic scene in which Jack and Rose stand at the bow of the ship, with Trump and Epstein cast in the roles.

Titled 'King of the World,' the statue references the famous line shouted by Leonardo DiCaprio’s character in the film. A plaque beside the monument describes the pair’s relationship as one built on “luxurious travel, raucous parties, and secrets.”

The installation was created by the group Secret Handshake, which also placed banners nearby referencing the connection between the two men. Organizers said the statue will remain on display until March 13.

Statues are erected in celebration of something or someone, but perceptions change over time, and what was once considered a legitimate tribute can later be interpreted in a completely different way. In this gallery, we look at the world’s most controversial statues that have been removed. These are monuments that stood for something many people no longer relate to, or indeed agree with.
