The Social Security Administration (SSA) has begun classifying thousands of immigrants with temporary legal status as dead, effectively canceling their Social Security numbers, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter, The New York Times reports.

By marking these individuals as dead in federal databases, the SSA's actions may sever their access to banking services, employment verification, and government benefits. Financial institutions rely heavily on Social Security records to verify identities and detect fraud, meaning those affected could be locked out of essential services overnight.

Though the SSA has not publicly commented on the rationale behind the move, the agency has previously acknowledged that correcting a mistakenly reported death is a “long and challenging” process that can cause significant financial hardship.

With so many of President Donald Trump’s policies focusing on immigration, many are wondering what impact these measures will have on the US economy and beyond. To find out more, click through the following gallery.
