▲Zojila Pass is an extremely narrow road that becomes even more dangerous depending on weather conditions. It is located in the western part of the Himalayas and Srinagar, a region known for having strong winds and heavy snow.
▲This is one of the most important roads in the Philippines. This is because it's the only link between the most remote areas of Baguio and the mountains. Some parts of this highway are extremely dangerous, especially during the rainy season, when landslides are common and the asphalt is always slippery.
▲The main feature of this road is its 48 hairpin bends that extend through the Eastern Alps. The road is especially dangerous for that very reason. The strong winds and sharp curves make defensive driving a must.
▲This part of Russia has some of the lowest temperatures in the world. The road is filled with snow and ice and the conditions can become extremely precarious. It's only possible to travel on this road for two months of the year, with minimally safe conditions.
▲The conditions on this road are extremely poor. The road is 25 mi (40 km) long and has many potholes and extremely slippery areas.
▲This road stretches for 1,063 mi (1,711 km) and crosses the peninsula of Baja California to Cabo San Lucas. Despite being paved in some areas, it is mostly a dirt road with several hazards, passing cliff edges with no guardrails.
▲Skippers Canyon Road is one of New Zealand's best-known roads, because of its surrounding scenery. However, this is a rather narrow and windy road, and you need a special permit to drive through it. Standard car insurance doesn't cover this road!
▲The Pan-American Highway is one of the longest roads in the world, going from Alaska to South America. It crosses various types of scenery and terrains, from mountains and jungles, to glaciers and deserts.
▲The problem with this road is the pavement and the fact that it is located on the ninth largest mountain range in the world, Karakoram. Falling from here is certain death. Various parts of the road are not paved and there are no guardrails.
▲Built in 1850, this road goes through great changes in altitude along its route. Sichuan Road is one of the highest roads in the world. It is dangerous, especially during the winter, when landslides and avalanches occur.
▲The sinuous nature of this road is what makes it so special. The road is closed during winter, since it's impossible to drive there with ice and snow.
▲The scenery surrounding this road is incredible, with a beautiful view of the Pacific Ocean. However, being a mountain road, it's full of hazards. In addition to the bad conditions on the surface, this area is also vulnerable to earthquakes and typhoons.
▲This dangerous tunnel, which passes through a mountain, takes you to a small village at the top. It was built by locals in 1972 and is now seen as one of the most dangerous roads in the world, due to the lack of safety and also extremely poor conditions when it rains.
▲Known as 'Death Road', this road is very narrow and has no protective guardrails. The dust and rain of this region don't help either. It is estimated that between 200 and 300 people die on this road every year.
▲This is a long road with little traffic. Seems safe, right? The problem with this route is that many drivers go too fast, resulting in horrific crashes every year.
▲This road is known as the 'Killer Highway' because every year several accidents involving pedestrians, cyclists, and other drivers occur. Speeding and poor driving skills make it a very dangerous road, despite the fact that it's a wide urban highway that's only 7.5 mi (12 km) long.
▲This road becomes especially dangerous in the winter. It's full of potholes and has a slippery surface.
▲Extending for more than 400 mi (600 km), this road passes through remote forests, tundras, and the Yukon River. What makes this route even more frightening is that has the longest stretch of road in the US where there are no gas stations or service stations. You don't want to break down on this road! Avalanches are also a threat.
▲The A682 is considered the worst road in the UK. A 2007 article published by Motorcycle News showed that a 15-mile (24-kilometer) stretch of this road was the scene of more than 100 deaths in the previous decade, with 57% of the collisions involving motorcycles.
▲This is one of the most important roads in the UK, linking Oxford to Aberystwyth in Wales. It's very narrow for such a busy road and a number of head-on collisions occur here every year.
▲This is the second largest road in Brazil and is known as the 'Highway of Death.' The road claims many lives every year.
▲This bridge is so narrow that just crossing a single car is an extremely difficult task. Besides not having rails, the rotting bridge is almost always frozen due to the extreme Siberian climate.
▲According to a Geotab report, Highway 1 is the most dangerous road in the United States, with the country's highest rate of fatal collisions.
▲Strong winds, steep cliffs, and tight curves without guardrails. These are the fatal characteristics that gave this road its nickname of 'Million Dollar Highway.' This is because locals would only risk their lives on that road for a million dollars!
▲

The road is narrow and accidents here are so common that the authorities stopped counting the fatalities several years ago. A person dies on this road almost every day, whether due to crashes or Taliban-led bombings and kidnappings.

When we get into our cars, we tend to assume that the greatest danger out there is other drivers. The roads themselves don't usually pose much of a risk. However, TV shows like 'World's Most Dangerous Roads' and 'Ice Road Truckers' have shown that there are certain routes around the world that have a much higher potential to take the lives of bold travelers. These roads are often carved into the sides of mountains, or pass through areas with such extreme weather conditions that drivers truly take their lives into their own hands by choosing to travel that way. They have been proven to have exponentially higher rates of accidents and fatalities, earning them foreboding nicknames.
