CELEBRITY Pope francis
Pope Francis is known for his humanitarian work and his bold opinions. Sometimes he causes controversy with his relatively liberal points of view.
Most recently, Italian writer Carlo Petrini published a book, ‘TerraFutura: Conversations With Pope Francis on Integral Ecology,’ in which the Pontifex Maximus referred to sex and food, among other pleasures, as gifts from God, adding that to enjoy them is not a sin.
“Pleasure arrives directly from God. It is neither Catholic nor Christian nor anything else; it is simply divine,” he tells Petrini. “The pleasure of eating and sexual pleasure come from God.”
The Pope certainly breaks from the church’s history of condemnation for life’s carnal pleasures, but he has quite a fascinating history himself, which may explain his modern views. Click through to learn more about the pontiff before he became head of the Catholic church.
