Lupus is an autoimmune disease that affects the immune system and makes it attack your own body tissue, causing inflammation and alterations to the function of some organs. There are several celebrities that have been open about their experience with the rare disease.
Nick Cannon is one of them, and on the 10-year anniversary of his diagnosis, the host shared a video on his eponymous talk show reflecting on his journey with the "sudden and mysterious illness that almost took my life," he said. The video starts its documentation on January 3, 2012, and includes a mix of home footage with his family and then-wife Mariah Carey beneath his narration. Then he started swelling up and experienced shortness of breath with a pain on his right side, and he awoke in the hospital with doctors telling him a lot of bad news. "It's the last place you wanna be, man," he said. "Doctors telling you you could die."
Luckily the video continues on with Cannon taking control of his lifestyle, from workouts to diet, and even to his job, making the drastic changes necessary for his health. He concludes that his diagnosis was "a way to help others through my experience." He added, "I can now say look what we went through. It was hard. It was a struggle, but we made it through."
