Retrospective

Beyoncé has officially added another prestigious accolade to her career: her first Emmy Award. The singer won in the category of Best Costumes for Variety, Nonfiction or Reality Programming for 'Beyoncé Bowl,' her Western-themed halftime show during Netflix’s Christmas NFL game between the Baltimore Ravens and the Houston Texans.

The award was part of a set of so-called juried Emmys announced on August 12, which are determined outside the standard voting process and awarded by committees. These specialized honors, often technical, will be formally presented at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards on September 7—one week before the Primetime Emmys.

Despite 10 prior Emmy nominations, this marks Beyoncé’s first win, placing her halfway to the coveted EGOT title, which celebrates winners of an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony. With 35 Grammys already under her belt, the star needs only an Oscar and a Tony to complete the rare feat.

Beyoncé has been breaking records throughout her career, building an almost impossibly consistent and clean trajectory to global superstardom. Each new project seems to outshine the last, and with this Emmy win she continues to compete only with herself at the very top.
