Christina Applegate to Candace Owens
- Conservative commentator Candace Owens went on an ableist rant in a March 22 episode of her podcast entitled, 'Sorry, Representation Does Not Matter.' Owens was incensed by ads for the new SKIMS Adaptive Collection which features disabled models wearing the new shapewear collection designed to be more accessible for those with limited mobility. "I don't really understand how far we're going to take this inclusivity thing, I really don’t get it, and if I am wrong educate me," said Owens, who has more than a million listeners. "I don't know why this needs to be done. I'm just getting tired of this all inclusivity thing. It seems ridiculous." Looking at a photo of Haleigh Rosa modeling for the campaign in a wheelchair, Owens said, "Whose idea was this? Was it your idea? Okay, you’re fired.” Needless to say, the backlash against Owens' words was swift. The model in question, Haleigh Rosa, spoke to the Mirror, describing them as horrifying and disgusting. Actress Christina Applegate was outraged when she heard the news and couldn't help but take to Twitter to slam Owens' comments. Applegate was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2021 and has been open about struggling with her condition and reduced mobility since then. "Going to try and sleep but my rage is keeping me awake. Candace Owens, do you know when you have seen pictures of me how [ ] hard it was to get my clothes on? A team has to help me!!! So I’m excited for accessibility clothing for me and my community." However, she followed that up with another tweet that showed a change of heart. "I thought my last tweet was enough. But then my heart said something else. No rage. If Candace wants to get on the phone with me to be educated on being disabled. I will not come with anger. I will come with love. Because she needs to hear that. I pray for her tonight."

Doja Cat
- Doja Cat turned heads at the Schiaparelli show during Paris Fashion Week when she showed up completely in red, covered in 30,000 crystals and body paint. But critics online somehow took issue with the fact that the singer didn't have her eyelashes done. "If lashes are what you all want, then lashes are what you'll get," she wrote on her Instagram story. Then she stepped out for the Viktor & Rolf show in a mustache, goatee, and brows—all made from faux eyelashes. When asked about her look at the show, Doja explained to Nylon, “A few days ago, I did Schiaparelli, and people were saying that I didn't have lashes, and that they were disappointed that I didn't have on lashes yet I worked with one of the greatest makeup artists of all time, Pat McGrath, and so today I gave them lashes. So I hope they're happy. I just want to make people happy so...” She added that she loved being at Paris Fashion Week, and with a smirk she added, "I love expressing myself here."

Dr. Dre and Marjorie Taylor Greene
- Dr. Dre took personal offense when Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene used his hit 'Still D.R.E.' in her video on social media, and quickly sent her a cease and desist for using his music. “I don’t license my music to politicians, especially someone as divisive and hateful as this one,” Dre, born Andre Young, said in a statement. Greene is infamous for promoting white nationalism and the far-right conspiracy theory QAnon. The letter from Dre’s attorney, Howard King, dated January 9, is full of zingers. "One might expect that, as a member of Congress, you would have a passing familiarity with the laws of our country. It’s possible, though, that laws governing intellectual property are a little too arcane and insufficiently populist for you to really have spent much time on," the letter reads, as per NBC. "We’re writing because we think an actual lawmaker should be making laws not breaking laws, especially those embodied in the constitution by the founding fathers." A spokesperson for Greene then sent a response to Dre that said: “While I appreciate the creative chord progression, I would never play your words of violence against women and police officers, and your glorification of the thug life and drugs.”

Simu Liu
- Quentin Tarantino ruffled some feathers with his criticism of the "Marvel-ization of Hollywood" and his claim that the actors in the MCU are "not movie stars." Tarantino added that "it’s just the fact that [Marvel movies] are the entire representation of this era of movies right now. There’s not really much room for anything else. That’s my problem,” but Simu Liu, star of 'Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,' had a bone to pick with the idealization of a Hollywood past. "If the only gatekeepers to movie stardom came from Tarantino and Scorsese, I would never have had the opportunity to lead a $400 million plus movie," Liu tweeted, referencing Martin Scorsese's previous comment that Marvel Cinematic Universe movies are "not cinema." "I am in awe of their filmmaking genius," Liu continued. "They are transcendent auteurs. But they don't get to point their nose at me or anyone." And in a follow-up tweet he added, "No movie studio is or ever will be perfect. But I'm proud to work with one that has made sustained efforts to improve diversity onscreen by creating heroes that empower and inspire people of all communities everywhere." Liu concluded with a final stinger to bring the point home: "I loved the 'Golden Age' too.. but it was white as hell."

Steve Toussaint
- 'House of the Dragon' reviews poured in after its August 21 premiere, but they weren't all positive. Steve Toussaint, who plays Lord Corlys Velaryon on the series, slammed viewers of the 'Game of Thrones' prequel who were taking issue with his casting as a Black man—particularly in a show that was notably lacking diversity from the start. “It seems to be very hard for people to swallow,” Toussaint said in an interview with Men’s Health, then added, “They are happy with a dragon flying. They’re happy with white hair and violet-colored eyes, but a rich Black guy? That’s beyond the pale.” Ridiculing people's reluctance at a Black character with "Targaryen white-blonde" hair when the entire world is a fantasy is probably the best way to deal with the online whining.

Keke Palmer
- Following remarks about longtime star Keke Palmer experiencing a "breakout" role in Jordan Peele’s 'Nope,' a viral tweet on July 23 drew attention to a perceived difference in mainstream popularity between Palmer and Zendaya, who are both former child-stars, claiming it is “one of the clearest examples of how colorism plays out in Hollywood.” But Palmer wasn't having any of it. The next day Palmer tweeted, "A great example of colorism is to believe I can be compared to anyone. I’m the youngest talk show host ever. The first Black woman to star in her own show on Nickelodeon, & the youngest & first Black Cinderella on broadway. I’m an incomparable talent. Baby, THIS, is Keke Palmer.” The 28-year-old star continued, “I’ve been a leading lady since I was 11 years old. I have over 100+ credits, and currently starring in an original screenplay that’s the number one film at the box office #NOPE. I’ve had a blessed career thus far, I couldn’t ask for more but God continues to surprise me.” 'Nope' opened in first place at the weekend’s box office, so it's clear Palmer doesn't need our help in securing her place among the greats.

Halsey
- Halsey addressed the overturn of Roe v. Wade during her show at Phoenix’s Ak-Chin Pavilion amphitheater on June 26, advocating for reproductive rights. But it seems some of her fans were upset by the speech and videos show her saying, "If you don't like it you can go home right now, I don't care. If you don't like it I don't know why you came to a Halsey concert..." Another fan later shared her disgust at the people who left on Twitter, and Halsey responded with the greatest line: "downside of doing outdoor venues: no door to hit them on the way out."

Lizzo
- Liam Payne made some strong comments about his former One Direction bandmates on the Impaulsive podcast, claiming that Simon Cowell created the band with him in mind, and that he was the original member. "From what I've heard part of the reason One Direction was made was because of Simon's promise to me. That in two years I'll make this work for you," the singer said. "So he kind of started with my face and worked out around the rest. I've never told this story before." Then Lizzo, a close friend and occasional collaborator with former One Directioner Harry Styles—who has enjoyed a much more successful solo career since—made a TikTok commenting on recent news and at one point referenced the Payne interview. Without directly naming him, Lizzo said: "I don't know who lied to that poor boy, but we all know he was not the front man."

Elizabeth Olsen
- Martin Scorsese told Empire in 2019 that Marvel movies "are not cinema," and likened them to "theme parks." Then Francis Ford Coppola echoed his statements and added, "Martin was kind when he said it's not cinema. He didn't say it's despicable, which I just say it is." But MCU star Elizabeth Olsen, who plays the role of Wanda Maximoff/The Scarlet Witch, criticized those famed filmmakers' comments as they "make [Marvel movies] seem like a lesser type of art," she told The Independent. "I'm not saying we're making indie art films, but I just think it takes away from our crew, which bugs me." "These are some of the most amazing set designers, costume designers, camera operators – I feel diminishing them with that kind of criticism takes away from all the people who do award-winning films, that also work on these projects," the actress said. Olsen acknowledged that the MCU movies are intended to make a lot of money, and added, "From an actor's point of view, whatever, I get it; I totally understand that there's a different kind of performance that's happening." She continued, "But I do think throwing Marvel under the bus takes away from the hundreds of very talented crew people. That's where I get a little feisty about that."

Rihanna
- Rihanna looked absolutely show-stopping as she arrived to the Dior womenswear show during Paris Fashion Week on March 1 with her sizeable baby bump dressed in a black lingerie look which included a tiny black thong, lacy bra, sheer skirt, thigh-high leather boots, and a matching coat. All that probably took quite a bit of time to prepare, and as she entered the venue one attendee can be heard in a viral video yelling "you're late" at the Fenty beauty mogul. Rihanna paused, turned to the woman with a straight face, and said just two words: "No [ ]" It was an instantly meme-able moment, and one true fans of her music especially love because they know all too well that RiRi runs on her own time no matter how much pressure is on.

Thandiwe Newton to Sean Penn
- Thandiwe Newton clapped back on behalf of all feminists following some outdated comments from Sean Penn. Earlier in January, Penn complained to UK outlet i News that "there has been an absence of male behavior" and that men in American culture have "become wildly feminized." Newton took to Twitter to air out her incredulity at Penn's comments. "@SeanPenn Dude what are you SAY-ING??" she wrote on January 30. "Like for REAL? You're a jibbering FOOL. MF you used to be sexy but now you're just tragic." And that was before she had learned that Penn had reiterated his toxic ideas of masculinity in an interview with his daughter Dylan Penn for The Independent. "I have these very strong women in my life who do not take masculinity as a sign of oppression toward them," he added. "There are a lot of, I think, cowardly genes that lead to people surrendering their jeans and putting on a skirt." Then Newton tweeted, "In front of your DAUGHTER!? That poor little mite. Thank God her Mum's so dope," Dylan's mother being Robin Wright. As for Dylan's opinion? According to the outlet, while her father was speaking she was "quiet, staring into space."

Billie Eilish to Benny Blanco on behalf of Charlie Puth
- Charlie Puth was targeted by music producer Benny Blanco for months non TikTok, with Blanco posting videos making fun of Puth's voice and telling him to "Shut the [ ] up" and making fun of him. "You know, man, these videos were really funny at first," the singer addressed Blanco in a video in November. "I don't exactly know why you've been so mean to me these past couple of months, but it does genuinely hurt my feelings. I used to look up to you, and I don't know where all this is coming from." But that didn't stop Blanco who replied, "Look at you: You sit in a room all day and make TikToks… Dude, what the hell's wrong with you? Look at your hair. It looks like you've got a toupee or a wig on or something." That was the last straw for Puth's friend, Billie Eilish. The young singer took to TikTok herself to reply to Blanco's video and reminded him of a hilarious fact, "What do you do all day, Benny?" she asked. "The same thing. Literally, the same thing." Puth wrote in the comments section, "Thank you."

Madonna
- Madonna made waves with a racy lingerie photoshoot shared to Instagram, but not everyone was a fan. 50 Cent boldly shared one of her photos on his own Instagram and wrote in the caption, "yo this is the funniest [ ] LOL." He added, "That's Madonna under the bed trying to do like a virgin at 63. She shot out, if she don't get her old [ ] up." Madge then took to her Instagram stories to share a picture of her and the rapper from an appearance on 'Total Request Live.' "Here is 50 Cent pretending to be my friend," she wrote over the picture. "Now you have decided to talk smack about me. I guess your new career is getting attention by trying to humiliate others on social media. The least elevated choice you could make as an artist and an adult." And she wasn't done there, as she concluded, "You'r [sic] just jealous you won't look as good as me or have as much fun when you are my age." The 'In Da Club' rapper soon issued an apology to the pop star on Twitter, however the tweet has since been deleted.

Hwang Dong-hyuk
- LeBron James discussed 'Squid Game' on camera with Anthony Davis after a preseason game in early October, but he was quite critical of the show's final scene and expressed his dissatisfaction plainly. In a subsequent interview with The Guardian, the show's creator Hwang Dong-hyuk was asked about James' comments, and in response he went right for the throat: "Have you seen Space Jam 2?" Hwang asked, referencing the 2021 remake of the classic which absolutely tanked in ratings. Hwang continued, "LeBron James is cool and can say what he wants. I respect that. I'm very thankful he watched the whole series. But I wouldn't change my ending," he added. "That's my ending. If he has his own ending that would satisfy him, maybe he could make his own sequel. I'll check it out and maybe send him a message saying, 'I liked your whole show, except the ending.'" Ouch!

Simone Biles
- Simone Biles received a lot of hate for prioritizing her mental health during the Tokyo Olympics and ducking out of some of the events. The star gymnast posted a photo on Instagram of her 2021 bronze and silver medals on September 7, however, and shared some choice words for those trolls. "Definitely not the way I planned the olympics going but I wouldn’t change anything for the world. I’m proud of myself and the career I’ve had thus far. this olympics doesn’t erase the past accomplishments I’ve achieved nor does it define who I am as an athlete. I’ve pushed through so much the past couple years, the word quitter is not in my vocabulary." Then came the stunning clapback: "for some of you that may be how you define me but keep talking because I can’t hear you over my 7 olympic medals which tied me for the most decorated gymnast EVER as well as most decorated american gymnast."

Selena Gomez
- Selenators stormed Twitter after the series 'The Good Fight' brought up the singer's organ transplant during a scene in the fourth episode of season 5. In the scene, a team is discussing cancel culture and brainstorms what is and isn't off-limits. While some characters suggest that people can't joke about necrophilia and autism, another character quips, "Selena Gomez’s kidney transplant." Gomez herself tweeted, "I am not sure how writing jokes about organ transplants for television shows has become a thing but sadly it has apparently. I hope in the next writer’s room when one of these tasteless jokes are presented it’s called out immediately and doesn’t make it on air." She added a big thank-you to her fans and a link to sign up to become an organ donor.

Tristan Thompson
- An uncomfortable battle of the exes emerged between Tristan Thompson and Lamar Odom over Khloe Kardashian. The reality TV star posted a bikini photo on Instagram, and in the comments section Thompson, who had recently split with Khloe, put two heart emojis and two drooling emojis. Odom, Khloe's ex-husband, also commented "hottie" along with some choice heart emojis. That apparently didn't sit well with Thompson, who wrote back: "@lamarodom God brought you back the first time. Play if you want, different results," with two shrugging emojis. His message recalled Odom's nearly fatal overdose in 2015, when a mix of drugs and alcohol landed him in a coma for three days. Khloe had put their divorce on hold to support him. Low blow!

But she added, "@50cent I see u still in ur feels about that dinner date u asked me on that I had to turn down," she wrote. "Let it go. U have a beautiful girlfriend, I have a loving husband. - The singer kissed a male dancer during his BET Awards performance of his hit song, 'Montero (Call Me By Your Name),' and after the applause faded, the keyboard warriors chimed in, but Lil Nas had perfect responses. “We are 4 months in and people are still acting surprised that i am being gay and sexual in performances of a song about gay and sexual [ ],” he tweeted, adding: “like the song is literally about gay sex what y’all want me to do play the piano while baking a cake?" Additionally, he set one critic straight about African history. They tweeted, "DONT USE AFRICAN CULTURE FOR [ ] LIKE THIS," and Lil Nas responded, "y’all really like to pretend homosexuality didn’t exist in african culture." Christina Applegate to Candace Owens

If you don't like it I don't know why you came to a Halsey concert..." Lizzo

The most epic celebrity clapbacks ever
Billie Eilish claps back at "bozos" calling her a "sellout" for expressing femininity: "Let women exist!"
© Getty Images
Celebrities have to deal with a lot of criticism. While many have loyal legions of fans who back them up at all times, there are also many haters (mostly keyboard warriors) who use the Internet to troll celebs. There are also many fellow celebrities who love to stir the pot, and stars are often left with two choices, ignore or clap back, and it's usually the latter.
That was Billie Eilish's response of choice when she hit her boiling point of online criticism. The Grammy-winner took to her Instagram Stories on May 27 and addressed "some comments I be seeing sometimes" about the way she looks. "I spent the first 5 years of my career getting absolutely OBLITERATED by you fools for being boy ish [sic] and dressing how I did & constantly being told I’d be hotter if I acted like a woman," she wrote. "[A]nd now when I feel comfortable enough to wear anything remotely feminine or flirting, I CHANGED and am a sellout.. and ‘what happened to her’ oMg iT’s nOt thE sAmE biLlie she’s just like the rest bla blah," Eilish included a photo of herself rolling her eyes. "[Y]ou guys are true idiots. LOL I can be BOTH you [ ] bozos. LET WOMEN EXIST!"
In a subsequent post, atop a photo of herself smiling at the camera, she added, "FUN FACT! Did you know that women are multifaceted!!!!!??? Shocking right?? Believe it or not women can be interested in multiple things." And in another: "Also that that femininity does not equal weakness??!!!! Omg?! Insane right? Who knew?? And also totally unheard of and insane to want to express yourself differently at different times." The 21-year-old added a touch more profanity for the haters before signing off with a peace sign.
Celebrity clapbacks range from hilarious to absolutely brutal, and they can be targeted at just about anyone. Indeed there are many witty celebs out there, and they too take to social media to express their opinions and shut down those who criticize them. So, without further ado, browse through this gallery and check out the best celebrity clapbacks.
