Melanie Lynskey
- Melanie Lynskey made her debut in the post-apocalyptic HBO drama 'The Last of Us' on February 5. She plays Kathleen, a ruthlessly intelligent warlord and revolutionary leader. Lynskey was forced to defend her casting when 'America’s Next Top Model' winner Adrianne Curry criticized her appearance on social media. The model commented under a photo from Lynskey's InStyle cover shoot, saying, “her body says life of luxury…not post apocolyptic [sic] warlord. where is Linda Hamilton when you need her?” Lynskey was quick to respond. "Firstly- this is a photo from my cover shoot for InStyle magazine, not a still from HBO’s The Last Of Us. And I’m playing a person who meticulously planned & executed an overthrow of FEDRA. I am supposed to be SMART, ma’am. I don’t need to be muscly. That’s what henchmen are for." She went on to explain that she wanted Kathleen to be "feminine, and soft-voiced, and all the things that we’ve been told are ‘weak.’" Lynskey finished with the point that the most exciting part of her job is subverting expectations, making it very clear that Curry's comments fell short of insult.

Selena Gomez
- Selena Gomez took body shamers in stride after her red carpet appearance at the 2023 Golden Globes. The multi-hyphenate star took to Instagram with her award show date, her little sister Gracie Teefey, to demonstrate some body positivity. “I’m a little bit big right now because I enjoyed myself during the holidays,” she said, asking Teefey, “I mean… right?” Her sister confirmed enthusiastically. Supporters were quick to defend Gomez, however, arguing that she shouldn't have to explain why her body looks a certain way. The star previously commented about body shaming in 2022, brushing it off because she realized she'll never be able to please anyone, concluding "I am perfect the way I am." Even earlier, on Instagram in 2018, she wrote: "The beauty myth - an obsession with physical perfection that traps modern woman in an endless cycle of hopelessness, self-consciousness, and self-hatred as she tries to fulfill society’s impossible definition of flawless beauty. I chose to take care of myself because I want to, not to prove anything to anyone."

Britney Spears
- Britney Spears has been incredibly fit for her entire life, partly due to her non-stop work schedule and partly due to her love of dance. She took to Instagram to share that was looking for a personal trainer a couple of months ago to help keep her in good shape. Apparently, one of the trainers she met with immediately crossed every line. "The first thing she did to me was literally—and I'm not even lying—pinch the skin on my stomach and legs and told me I need to get my younger body back," Spears revealed. "It made me cry. I obviously didn't hire her so I did it myself!!!" she went on. Spears decided to become her own personal trainer after that nasty experience and is fitter and feistier than ever.

Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears
- As a victim of much body shaming herself, Britney Spears felt it necessary to own up to a mistake she made in a September 13 Instagram post of a Rodney Dangerfield quote that says, "I found there was only one way to look thin: hang out with fat people," for which Spears wrote in the caption, "I wish I could have chosen [...] my dancers ... I mean if I had Christina Aguilera’s dancers I would have looked extremely small." Fans quickly informed her in the comment section that fatphobia and body shaming was not appropriate, and news of Aguilera unfollowing her came shortly after.

- Spears wrote in a follow-up post, "By no means was I being critical of Christina’s beautiful body, it is what it is !!! I flew to see her show once and the main thing I noticed was the difference of our people on stage !!! By no means did I even mention Christina, look at my post !!! I was inspired by her show and she is a beautiful woman of power … Thank you @xtina for inspiring me !!!" She continued, "To be honest, I’m not trying to be critical of anybody. What I posted is a projection of the insecurities I deal with all the time as a result of how my parents and the media have treated me … I would never intentionally body shame anybody because I know what it feels like … I struggle with this because of how I feel about myself, not because I hate how anybody looks." She added that she felt her family didn't let her choose her backup dancers to feed into her insecurity, and then thanked her fans for being understanding with her.

Yumi Nu
- Controversial clinical psychologist and YouTuber Jordan Peterson had the audacity to tweet about the model's cover debut for Sports Illustrated Swimsuit. "Sorry. Not beautiful. And no amount of authoritarian tolerance is going to change that," he wrote, and fans, as well as people who never even heard of Nu, came to her defense and mocked Peterson's response. “’Authoritarian’? Chunky women on magazine covers? You sound like a parody of you,” one Twitter user—on the more savory side of the responses—wrote. “It’s a conscious progressive attempt to manipulate & retool the notion of beauty, reliant on the idiot philosophy that such preferences are learned & properly changed by those who know better,” the '12 Rules For Life' author responded, with two links to scientific studies on attractiveness (which don't substantiate his point, one user pointed out), while he failed to acknowledge the long history of "plus-size" attractiveness that eclipses the more recent skinny craze. Though Peterson did have some people echo his harmful comments about Nu's body, it appears he received such backlash he decided a few hours later to leave Twitter. "So I told my staff to change my password, to keep me from temptation, and am departing once again," he wrote, explaining, "The endless flood of vicious insult is really not something that can be experienced anywhere else"—which he ironically had sent in Nu's direction just hours earlier.

Beanie Feldstein
- 'Lady Bird' and 'Booksmart' star Beanie Feldstein opened up to Vogue about her struggle to meet society's beauty standards from a very young age. "It was clear to me that I was chubby and that I was bigger, and for a long time, because I was a kid, I would do what the adults were telling me to do, which is to try to not be that way," she said. Feldstein said that she was even pushed into diet programs such as Jenny Craig and Weight Watchers from the ages of 11 to 13 years old to help her lose weight. "I think I felt a lot of pressure from society, from my family, from my community," she revealed. "Then around 16 or 17, I just thought, 'I'm fine. There's nothing wrong with me.' One day I realized, 'I'm not the problem. This standard is the problem.'" Feldstein, who also stars in the Broadway revival of 'Funny Girl,' took a moment to discuss body shaming in musical theater as well. "I have friends who used to have to 'weigh in' for their musical-theater programs," she told the outlet. "That should be illegal."

Camila Cabello
- Camila Cabello opened up about her struggle with body image after having a terrible time at the beach in Miami. In a lengthy post on Instagram April 2, the singer admitted that the paparazzi made her feel "vulnerable" and the subsequent comments online impacted her self-esteem. She said of her beach day: “I held my core so tight my abs hurt and didn’t breathe and barely smiled and was so self conscious of where the paps were the whole time i couldn’t let go and relax and do what we’re meant to do when we go out into nature," adding that she's "never had a worse time at the beach. Though she noted "I’m not yet at the point in my journey where I can not give a [ ]," as a single woman in her 20s with a new album on the way, she shared some of her strategies of dealing with body image issues which include listening to podcasts on intuitive eating, following women who accept their cellulite, stretch marks, bellies, bloating, and weight fluctuations, and reminding herself that when she felt shame around her body "I was thinking the culture’s thoughts and not my own. A culture who has gotten so used to an image of what a ‘healthy’ woman’s body looks like that is completely not real for a lot of women."

Maren Morris
- Country music superstar Maren Morris took to Instagram on March 19 to reminisce about her controversial decision to appear topless in Playboy. "Before I go into the next album era, I did @playboy in 2019 and got a lot of hate at the time, but I’m the proudest that I showed country female sexuality in its realist form here," she wrote in the caption. "We are nuanced, we are messy and stretch-marked in the most beautiful way. Don’t sleep on us. We tell your down home stories in the most unflinching, gorgeous lane." Sadly, her conservative country music fans just saw another opportunity to rehash the old hate and body shaming, but Morris wasn't afraid to respond. She shared her response to a comment that read, "Please dress appropriate" on her Stories, which read: "RESPECT 4 MOM BOOBZ." She also noted, "I see this kind of comment a lot on country music accounts at me, soooooo GET OVER IT."

Nicola Coughlan
- 'Bridgerton' star Nicola Coughlan made a public plea for people to stop commenting on her body—at the very least directly to her. The 'Derry Girls' actress wrote on Instagram on January 30, "Hello! So just a thing - if you have an opinion about my body please, please don’t share it with me." She said that most people are "not trying to be offensive" but added, "I am just one real life human being and it’s really hard to take the weight of thousands of opinions on how you look being sent directly to you every day." Coughlan tried to reason with fans and continued, "If you have an opinion about me that’s ok, I understand I’m on TV and that people will have things to think and say but I beg you not to send it to me directly."

- 'Clueless' star Alicia Silverstone has been in the spotlight for decades and is no stranger to body shaming. Luckily, she seems to have a pretty healthy body image and pulls no punches when clapping back! When the actress came across a photo of herself online that was titled 'Alicia Silverstone Candid Fat Photo,' she gave a hilarious response on TikTok. She showed the photo with the ridiculous title and then cut to herself smiling and giving the middle finger, with the song 'abcdfu' by Gayle playing in the background. She captioned it "Damn. Janet Jackson
- For Janet Jackson, her body shamer was sadly her big brother. The singer addresses her relationship with Michael Jackson, along with her personal battles with weight fluctuation, in her new eponymous two-part documentary. "There were times when Mike used to tease me and call me names. 'Pig, horse, slaughter hog, cow," Jackson shared. "He would laugh about it and I'd laugh too, but then there was somewhere down inside that it would hurt." She was around 11 years old and he was adult at the time. "When you have somebody say you're too heavy, it affects you."

Melanie Lynskey
- Actress Melanie Lynskey said in an interview with Rolling Stone, published on January 15, that she was body shamed on the set of 'Yellowjackets.' She alleged that a member of the production made critical comments about her body during filming: "They were asking me, ‘What do you plan to do? I'm sure the producers will get you a trainer. They'd love to help you with this,'" she recalled. Fortunately, Lynskey said her co-stars Tawny Cypress, Christina Ricci, and Juliette Lewis quickly came to her defense, adding that Lewis even wrote a letter to the Showtime series' producers on her behalf. These comments are no small issue, especially as Lynskey has admitted that she previously struggled with disordered eating and online body shaming.

Rebel Wilson
- Rebel Wilson has undergone a serious physical transformation in 2020, shedding as much as 80 pounds (36kg). However, she has mixed feelings about her weight loss. The actress revealed that agents used to take one look at her and say "no way" because of her weight. This led her to say "You know what? I'm gonna take something that you think is a disadvantage — I don't actually think it's a disadvantage — and I'm going to turn it into my success story." Wilson became hugely successful even though she was rejected for many roles because of her body type. After embarking on her year-long health journey, she realized that she was actually able to lose weight, which she had previously felt was impossible. This made her feel conflicted about giving in to the aesthetic standards of the entertainment industry, even though her career wasn't the motivation for her lifestyle change.

Whoopi Goldberg
- 'Shark Tank' judge Barbara Corcoran faced some serious backlash after body shaming Whoopi Goldberg during a conversation on 'The View.' Co-host Sunny Hostin was talking about the brand Good American‘s range of size-inclusive jeans, and Goldberg joked “Well, I have to try them…Will they fit this COVID [butt]?” Corcoran responded by saying “When you get finished with those jeans, and decide you don’t like them, give them to me. I’m gonna make two pairs.” Fans were not pleased about the rude comment and Corcoran posted an apology video shortly afterward, saying “I made a joke at Whoopi’s expense, which I now realize wasn’t funny. For anyone who I may have offended unintentionally, I just wanted to say I really am very sorry.”

Billie Eilish
- Billie Eilish is one young star whose body has, for some reason, become an obsession for millions of fans and media outlets. She rose to fame at the age of 13 and usually wore baggy clothes that hid her body. Now 19 years old, she has been the focus of intense scrutiny after experimenting with new styles. She famously appeared on the cover of Vogue in June wearing a corset and showing off her new blonde hairstyle. Her elegant Marilyn Monroe-inspired Met Gala look was another departure from her previous look. However, rather than applauding the singer for her excellent taste and moving on, many are obsessing over how her body looks in her new clothes. Eilish even lost some fans after posting a photo from her Vogue shoot on Instagram: "I lost 100,000 followers, just because of the boobs. People are scared of big boobs."

Alana Thompson
- Alana Thompson, better known by the nickname Honey Boo Boo, has presented a new version of herself to the world with her recent Teen Vogue profile. In the in-depth interview, she discusses the body-shaming she has experienced since she first appeared on TV at the age of six starring in the TLC reality show 'Toddlers & Tiaras.' Thompson is now 16 years old and has spent 10 years in the public eye having her body scrutinized, criticized, and ridiculed. While many say that Gen Z is breaking down fatphobia, Thompson disagrees: “I feel like my generation is probably making it worse. Everybody's all about body positivity, body positivity, until they see a body they don't like.” Luckily, she has her own ideas about self-worth. “I don't ever look at people and I'm like, ‘Oh, I wish I was like her,’” she told the interviewer. “Because I don't ever wish to be like nobody. I am my own person.”

In the video posted on July 16, she explains that she was just on a jog, "minding my own business trying to be fit," wearing a top that shows her belly, which she then shows in the video. "And I wasn't tucking it in, because I was running and existing like a normal person that doesn't tuck it in all the time," she continued. "And I was like, 'Damn.' But then I reminded myself being at war with your body is so last season." In her candid, make-up-free clip, the singer adds, "I am grateful for this body that lets me do what I need to do. We are real women with curves and cellulite and stretchmarks and fat. And we gotta own that, baby."

- Lizzo has long been expertly fending off body-shamers, but on an Instagram Live on August 15 she broke down after the latest wave of fat-shaming, racism, and accusations of catering to white audiences, all of which followed the release of her and Cardi B's new song 'Rumors.' "For the most part it doesn't hurt my feelings, I don't care," she said through her tears. "I just think when I'm working this hard my tolerance gets lower...my patience is lower, I'm more sensitive. And it gets to me."

- Usually Lizzo lets people's harmful comments pass without wasting her time, but she addressed comedian Aries Spears' fat-shaming comments about her body at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards while accepting the Video For Good award. In a recent interview, Spears had taken lows blows at both Lizzo and her supporters, going so far as to claim "that she looks like the [poo] emoji" and "a plate of mashed potatoes." Of the seemingly unnecessary ordeal, Khloé explained on Instagram that she has struggled with body image her whole life and that, after working so hard on herself, she deserves the right to remove unflattering photos. "In truth, the pressure, constant ridicule and judgment my entire life to be perfect and to meet other's standards of how I should look has been too much to bear," she wrote, adding examples of people calling her the "fat sister" and accusing her of weight loss surgery. Kate Winslet
- Kate Winslet was only 22 years old when the multi-Oscar-winning blockbuster 'Titanic' came out in 1997. The film was an instant classic and many of the scenes have been iconic for decades. However, one hotly-debated plot hole generated waves of body shaming against the young Winslet. In the heartbreaking final scene Jack lets go of the floating door they're using as a life raft so that Rose might survive, but fans always wondered, wasn't there enough room for both of them? Tabloids and toxic fans joked that Winslet's excessive weight was the reason. “Apparently I was too fat,” Winslet said during an interview on the 'Happy Sad Confused' podcast. “Why were they so mean to me? They were so mean. I wasn’t even [ ] fat.” As a woman in her forties, Winslet looks back with empathy at her younger self, struggling with her changing body and newfound fame. If she could go back and address the journalists criticizing her, she would say, "Don’t you dare treat me like this. I’m a young woman, my body is changing, I’m figuring it out, I’m deeply insecure, I’m terrified, don’t make this any harder than it already is." Winslet went on to describe the media's treatment of her as bullying, and even "borderline abusive.”

Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears

Alicia Silverstone

Camila Cabello - Camila Cabello has recently been fending off body shamers, and she took to TikTok to share a much needed lesson on self-love.

Lizzo
- Lizzo has long been expertly fending off body-shamers, but on an Instagram Live on August 15 she broke down after the latest wave of fat-shaming, racism, and accusations of catering to white audiences, all of which followed the release of her and Cardi B's new song 'Rumors.' "For the most part it doesn't hurt my feelings, I don't care," she said through her tears. "I just think when I'm working this hard my tolerance gets lower...my patience is lower, I'm more sensitive. And it gets to me."

Lizzo
- Usually Lizzo lets people's harmful comments pass without wasting her time, but she addressed comedian Aries Spears' fat-shaming comments about her body at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards while accepting the Video For Good award. In a recent interview, Spears had taken lows blows at both Lizzo and her supporters, going so far as to claim "that she looks like the [poo] emoji" and "a plate of mashed potatoes." His comments went viral and fans waited for Lizzo to clap back, and after she thanked her fans for supporting her while onstage accepting her award on August 28, she dove in. "And now, to the [ ] that got something to say about me in the press...You know what? I'm not gonna say nothing." She continued, "They be like, Lizzo, why don't you clap back? He then tagged Chris’ personal trainer and writing, “Are those @zocobodypro’s pins?” Fans quickly chimed in as they noticed the difference between Chris' massive triceps and his relatively slim calves, and they were merciless.

- After an unedited photo of Khloé appeared online, the Kardashian team took legal action to remove it. Of the seemingly unnecessary ordeal, Khloé explained on Instagram that she has struggled with body image her whole life and that, after working so hard on herself, she deserves the right to remove unflattering photos. "In truth, the pressure, constant ridicule and judgment my entire life to be perfect and to meet other's standards of how I should look has been too much to bear," she wrote, adding examples of people calling her the "fat sister" and accusing her of weight loss surgery. She added that she will continue to edit her photos as she pleases.

- Kate Winslet slammed the media's "straight-up cruel" fixation on her weight in a new interview with The Guardian, describing the impact it had on her self-esteem as a young actress. Celebrities who have been body shamed
Taylor Lautner addresses hateful comments saying that he "did not age well"
© Getty Images
Can you imagine a world where everyone looks the same? A world where body measurements and whatever standards deemed ideal by society would be met by every single person? It would be pretty boring. We come in all shapes and sizes, and that should be celebrated, not demonized.
Celebrities, however, are exposed to a much wider audience, and their image is constantly under harsh scrutiny by the public and the media. Luckily, many stars have clapped back at body shamers. And many stars have the fanbase to clap back for them!
Taylor Lautner shared a video on Instagram on May 22 where he confronted criticism about his looks head-on. The 'Twilight' alum reposted comments that were left on a post about him, including people saying that he "did not age well," mean remarks about his hairline, and comments that he "aged like a raisin."
"If this was 10 years ago, five years ago, maybe even two, three years ago, that really would have got under my skin," Lautner said. "It would have caused me to want to just go in a hole and not go outside." Luckily, he added, he's now "in a different place" and is no longer in an "unhealthy position" where he focuses on the "wrong things." He explained that "you find value where you put it," and he no longer puts value in what others think but rather in knowing who he is. "My biggest point is just think about and remember where you put your value in life, and also just be nice. It's not that difficult. Let's be nice to each other. Let's spread love and positivity. It's that simple."
The actor has spoken about his struggles with mental health and body image in the past, particularly how his ripped physique for the 'Twilight' films, and his extensive shirtlessness between the ages of 16-20, led to body image issues later on. "I did not know that it was affecting me or going to affect me in the future with body image, but now looking back at it, of course it did, and of course it is going to," he told 'The Squeeze' podcast in February.
Unfortunately, society has miles to go in terms of body image. From "too fat" to "too skinny" and everything in between, in this gallery you'll learn more about how your favorite celebs have been body shamed. Click through.
