Kim Petras just made history with her and Sam Smith's Grammy win for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for their popular song 'Unholy.' “Sam graciously wanted me to accept this award because I’m the first transgender woman to win this award,” Petras announced from the stage to huge applause and standing ovation. “I just want to thank all the incredible transgender legends before me who kicked these doors open for me so I can be here tonight,” she continued. She may have been referring to the likes of electronic music composer Wendy Carlos, who earned Grammys as a trans woman back in the ’60s. Petras went on to thank the late trans pop genius Sophie, who predicted she'd win a Grammy, and gave a shout-out to Madonna for fighting for LGBTQ rights.
As the TV, film, music, and fashion industries become more and more inclusive, the number of roles for transgender people is increasing rapidly every year. Groundbreaking TV shows like the ballroom culture drama 'Pose' with almost entirely LGBTQ+ casts are putting the spotlight on the talent and beauty in the transgender community that has long been overlooked.
It's a big move for representation, and indeed many actors, musicians, athletes, models, writers, and other public figures are putting themselves forward to create new spaces in their industries. Their work inspires young trans people who may be struggling with their identity in a world that sorely lacks representation of LGBTQ+ stories.
