Ozzy Osbourne, the legendary lead singer of Black Sabbath and widely regarded as the godfather of heavy metal, has died at the age of 76, his family confirmed on July 22. He passed away at home in Birmingham, England, surrounded by loved ones.
"It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning," the family said in a statement. In 2020, he publicly revealed he had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.
Osbourne’s death comes just weeks after a farewell concert at Villa Park, where he reunited with Black Sabbath bandmates in front of 42,000 fans.
Known for his haunting vocals and dark stage persona, Osbourne helped define the sound of heavy metal with Black Sabbath's catalog. The band sold over 75 million records worldwide.
Beyond music, Osbourne became a pop culture figure in the early 2000s with 'The Osbournes,’ an MTV reality show that offered a chaotic, humorous glimpse into his home life with wife Sharon and their children in Los Angeles.
Whether it's due to old age, an overdose, or a freak accident, the sudden loss of a beloved public figure is always hard to grapple with, as their presence lives on in popular culture. As 2025 passes the halfway point, we have already lost great actors, directors, musicians, and athletes, as well as the head of the Catholic Church.
