A new unpublished study, presented on October 6 in Berlin at the United European Gastroenterology Week congress, suggests that drinking even one can of sugary or diet soda a day may raise the risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) by 50–60%, potentially leading to cirrhosis or liver cancer.
Researchers analyzed data from nearly 124,000 people over 10 years and found that both sweetened and artificially sweetened drinks can cause fat buildup in the liver, increasing serious health risks.
