The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) issued an alert on July 11 about Vibrio bacteria, which are typically present in the Baltic Sea but are now emerging in coastal waters throughout Europe due to rising sea temperatures. “These conditions are becoming increasingly common in parts of Europe due to climate change,” the agency said.

Vibriosis, an infection caused by Vibrio bacteria, can lead to serious health problems. It typically spreads through the consumption of raw or undercooked shellfish—especially oysters—or through contact with contaminated seawater when someone has a cut or open wound.

Individuals with compromised immune systems or chronic liver disease face a greater risk of severe complications, including bloodstream infections, sepsis, necrotizing fasciitis (flesh-eating disease), and even limb amputation.

Far too small to be seen by the human eye, viruses and bacteria are identified by being placed under the microscope by scientists who use false color to enhance the detail of these infectious agents and single-cell organisms. The resulting images appear as miniature works of vibrant abstract art that could grace the walls of any contemporary gallery. But unlike art, these microscopic killers are a serious threat to health.

Click through the following gallery for a closer microscopic look at these dangerous organisms in vivid color.
