According to health officials, as of early September in the United States, West Nile virus cases are about 40% higher than normal, with over 770 reported cases, including roughly 490 severe cases, versus around 550 in an average year by this time.

Colorado is especially hard hit, with mosquito infection rates far above the usual. Health officials are warning people to use insect repellent, wear protective clothing, and take precautions outdoors.
