Australia is tightening its restrictions on teen social media access by adding YouTube to its upcoming ban for users under 16. The new regulation, set to take effect in December 2025, is part of a broader initiative aimed at shielding teenagers from harmful online content.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed the policy shift on July 30, following feedback from the country’s internet regulator, which cited survey data showing that 37% of minors encountered harmful material on the platform, according to DW.

The Alphabet-owned platform was initially exempt due to its educational use, but growing concerns over teen safety prompted the reversal. Other platforms already included in the ban are Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, and Facebook—all of which have opposed the measure.

It’s no secret that social media has a major influence on how teenagers interact with the world around them. While many young users find connection and expression online, others face risks such as anxiety, low self-esteem, and exposure to inappropriate content. The varying impact raises important questions about how much time teens spend online and how it affects their mental health and development. Understanding these differences is key to helping teens navigate the digital landscape safely and positively.
