On October 7, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen made an announcement during the opening of Danish Parliament, saying Denmark will ban social media for children under the age of 15.
Frederiksen emphasized that social media is contributing to rising levels of anxiety, depression, and lack of concentration among teenagers. She added that smartphones are "stealing our children’s childhood."
The ban will take effect in early 2026 and would apply to several social media platforms, though it remains unclear which ones. There would also be an exception allowing children as young as 13 to start using social media if they have parental permission.
Indeed, social media has a major influence on how teenagers interact with the world around them. For many teens, platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat provide a space to connect with friends, share their creativity, and stay updated on trends. However, while some teens may find it empowering and uplifting, others may experience anxiety, low self-esteem, or social pressure.
