Food poisoning

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has escalated a tomato recall in Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina to its most serious level, warning of a higher risk of salmonella that could cause severe illness or death.

The tomatoes, sold under the H&C Farms label, were distributed between April 23 and 28. While it's unlikely fresh tomatoes from the batch are still in circulation, salmonella can survive for weeks in dry conditions and months in wet ones, like freezers.

Food poisoning caused by salmonella is a common illness, often marked by symptoms like nausea, stomach cramps, and vomiting. It usually occurs after consuming contaminated food without realizing it. The good news is that salmonella infections can often be prevented with proper knowledge and precautions. In this gallery, you'll find all you need to know about salmonella, including what it is, how to prevent it, and who should be most concerned.
