Whale sightings are quite a rare phenomenon, and this is even more applicable to goose-beaked whales, which spend most of their lives underwater and come to the surface only briefly. For researchers, seeing them up close offers rare chances to collect samples and observe unique behaviors.

But since these mammals spend such little time above the surface, how do they get the necessary oxygen to thrive in the deep ocean? The answer: they don’t. Goose-beaked whales have so successfully adapted to oxygen-deprived environments that experts are now exploring how their biology can help neuroscience.
