The government shutdown has entered its 36th day, making it the longest in US history, after the Senate failed, for the 14th time, to pass a House-approved bill to end the impasse on November 4.
Despite the setback, lawmakers from both parties have hinted that a deal could be within reach, possibly as early as this week, as the shutdown continues to affect millions of Americans through federal program cuts, flight delays, and unpaid government workers nationwide.
These developments highlight the recurring nature of government shutdowns in American history. Since the first shutdown in 1976, there have been 22 federal shutdowns including the most recent, with political disagreements repeatedly bringing the federal government to a standstill.
