Reese Witherspoon has opened up about the lasting effects of an abusive relationship she experienced early in life, reflecting on how the trauma reshaped her. Speaking on the September 20 episode of The New York Times’ 'The Interview' podcast, the 49-year-old actress said that while she appeared professional and composed on the outside, she struggled with diminished self-esteem beneath the surface. She also added that it took time to recognize unhealthy dynamics.

Though she ultimately walked away, Witherspoon said the impact lingered, admitting, “My spirit had been diminished because I thought all those awful things that person said about me were true. I had to rewire my brain.”

The actress had previously spoken on the relationship, telling Oprah Winfrey in 2018 that the experience was a turning point in her life, one that forced her to draw firm boundaries and begin the process of healing.
