The United States has formally accepted a Boeing 747-8 jetliner as a gift from the government of Qatar, and the Air Force has now been asked to figure out a way to rapidly upgrade it so it can be put into use as a new Air Force One for President Donald Trump, a Defense Department spokesman confirmed on May 21.
Valued at approximately US$400 million, the jet will require extensive modifications before it can be deemed secure enough to transport the president, according to Pentagon officials.
This unprecedented move is raising serious ethical and legal questions. Democratic lawmakers and government ethics experts argue that the gift may breach the Constitution’s Foreign Emoluments Clause, although the Qatari Ministry of Defense described it more as a government-to-government transaction rather than a personal gift.
