Alabama -

Sloss Furnaces in Birmingham produced steel from the 1880s until the 1970s. Legend has it that a foreman named James "Slag" Wormwood was responsible for the death of 47 workers. Slag eventually fell (or was pushed?) into the largest furnace and died. Over 100 reports of paranormal activity have been made ever since.

Alaska -

You can now pop into the Red Onion Saloon in Skagway for some food, but back in 1897 the saloon also worked as a dance hall and brothel. The Saloon is said to be haunted by Lydia—one of the sex workers.

Arizona -

The Jerome Grand Hotel was originally built as the United Verde Hospital. It is estimated that more than 9,000 people died onsite during its years as a hospital. Sights of hospital gurneys, the sound of voices, and even the ghost of a cat have been reported.

Arkansas -

The Crescent Hotel in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, calls itself "America's Most Haunted Hotel," so that must say something, right? At one point, the hotel was bought by a salesman named Norman Baker, who turned it into a health resort. Despite having no medical training, he was said to offer cures to numerous diseases. It goes without saying that many people died as a result.

California -

The sunshine state also has dark spots, and the darkest is perhaps Whaley House in San Diego. Its long history of hauntings began following the execution of horse thief Yankee Jim Robinson. Then the Whaleys moved in and tragedy struck, including a baby dying of typhoid fever and a girl named Victoria taking her own life. The house is said to be haunted by the Whaleys to this day.

Colorado -

The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park is the number one spot when it comes to haunted places in Colorado. So much so, in fact, that it was the inspiration for Stephen King's 'The Shining.' King actually spent the night in the infamous room 217.

Connecticut -

Dudleytown is an abandoned old colonial village. It's haunted by numerous tragic events, including a massacre, death by epidemics, suicides, and lightning strikes. Even the woods around Dudleytown have been said to be "demonically possessed."

Delaware -

Around 2,700 prisoners are said to have died in extremely poor conditions at Fort Delaware, on Pea Patch Island in the Delaware River. So it doesn't really come as a surprise that this is the state's most haunted place.

Florida -

St. Augustine Lighthouse is said to be haunted by the ghost of the children of Hezekiah Pittee, who was the man responsible for rebuilding the lighthouse. The children drowned in the area. The "Man in Blue," who is supposedly the ghost of a lighthouse keeper, is also responsible for haunting the place, among other spirits.

Georgia -

Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah became famous thanks to the 1994 novel 'Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.' It's home to a famous ghost of a six-year-old girl named Gracie Watson who died of pneumonia. Some visitors have claimed to hear and see the girl, among other paranormal activity.

Hawaii -

The Pali Highway on the island of Oahu is said to be haunted by the ghost of an old woman and her dog. But there are many haunted spots along the road, including spots where murders took place, a Chinese cemetery, and Iolani Palace, which is said to be haunted by the spirit of Queen Lili'uokalani.

Idaho -

The Old Idaho State Penitentiary has a long history of poor conditions, dangerous inmates, and death. It closed its doors in 1973 but its ghostly activity is alive and well to this day.

Illinois -

Bachelor's Grove Cemetery in Midlothian dates back to around 1840. Paranormal activity includes restless spirits of the dead roaming the cemetery grounds, a ghost dog with red eyes, a farmer with a phantom horse, and driverless vehicles, among others.

Indiana -

The French Lick Springs Hotel in French Lick, Indiana, was originally a health resort. The hotel is said to be haunted by its previous owner, Thomas Taggart, and a bellhop who many guests claimed to have seen.

Iowa -

Eight people were murdered in 1912 at the now-called the Villisca Ax-Murder House. The crime remains unsolved to this day, and the house remains the most haunted location in Iowa.

Kansas -

Sallie House in Atchison was the home of a local physician, though the name derived from one of his patients. The doctor is said to have performed a surgery on a girl named Sally for appendicitis, but he did so before the anesthetics kicked in and she died in excruciating pain. Sally's ghost is said to haunt the house ever since.

Kentucky -

The Waverly Hills Sanatorium was the place where many victims of tuberculosis would come to rest...and die. Numerous ghosts have been reported on site, as well as other paranormal activity.

Louisiana -

The Lalaurie Mansion and the tomb of Marie Laveau are strong contenders for the most haunted locations in Louisiana, but it's the Myrtles Plantation in St. Francisville that takes the top spot. It's allegedly home to 12 different ghosts, including that of a young enslaved girl named Chloe.

Maine -

The Museums of Old York is a combination of a number of historical sites, including The Old York Historical Improvement Society, The Old Gaol Museum Committee, and The Society for the Preservation of Historic Landmarks in York County. It's the state's most haunted spot and home to the "White Witch," who is said to have been executed during the witch trials.

Maryland -

The 1862 Battle of Antietam took place on a creek near Sharpsburg, Maryland. Over 23,000 men were killed or wounded. The road where the numerous bodies are laid is today known as Bloody Lane, and it's the state's most haunted location.

Massachusetts -

The Turner-Ingersoll Mansion in Salem takes the top spot when it comes to haunted locations in the state. Also known as 'The House of the Seven Gables,' thanks to Nathaniel Hawthorne's novel, the house is said to have been cursed by those executed in the witch trials.

Michigan -

Mackinac Island in Lake Huron is a now popular tourist destination, but it used to be home to Odawa natives, many of whom were killed when the British arrived. Fort Mackinac also saw its fair share of deaths, especially during the War of 1812. As a result, there are multiple haunted spots around the island, including the ghost of a man named Harvey, who is said to have killed himself due to heartbreak at Mission Point Resort.

Minnesota -

The artificially-dug Wabasha Street Caves in St. Paul used to be a hang out spot for gangsters in the 1930s. The place is famously haunted, with paranormal phenomena including whistling, footsteps, and flickering lights being reported.

Mississippi -

The McRaven House in Vicksburg dates back to around 1797. It was built by a highwayman named Andrew Glass and later served as a Confederate field hospital. Many ghosts are said to haunt the house, including that of Mary Elizabeth Howard, a 15-year-old wife of one of the house's owners, who died giving birth to a child in one of the bedrooms.

Missouri -

The Lemp Mansion in St. Louis is the most haunted place in Missouri. A number of tragedies hit the former family home of Johann Adam Lemp. His son died and Lemp killed himself. An illegitimate son who had Down's Syndrome was also said to be imprisoned in the attic. It's easy to see how this became such a haunted location.

Montana -

The Old Montana Prison in Deer Lodge worked as a state prison from 1870 until 1979 and it's now a museum. Lots of paranormal activity has been reported, including a friendly ghost named Turkey Pete, who, according to legend, was a mentally ill man who "sold" turkeys to other inmates and was paid in fake money.

Nebraska -

It is said that Hummel Park in Omaha was originally a Native American burial ground. Fast forward to the 1900s, and legend has it that it was also the location of numerous lynchings. Satanic rituals and sacrifices also reportedly occurred at an abandoned shelter called the "Devil's Den." In summary, it's easy to see why this is such a haunted location.

Nevada -

Virginia City's oldest saloon, the Washoe Club, is the state's most haunted place. Now a museum, it is also the home of numerous ghosts. Most notably, the "Lady in Blue," who is often spotted on top of the stairs, as well as a scared little girl, and an old prospector who is said to steal drinks at the bar.

New Hampshire -

Mary Wallace was born in 1720 aboard a ship headed to America. Mary grew up and settled in Henniker, New Hampshire. Her ghost is said to haunt the Ocean Born Mary house (as it became known), where an apparition of Mary in her rocking chair was common.

New Jersey -

Clinton Road might be the most haunted road in America, but Pine Barrens is arguably even more haunted! The Pines is home to an evil entity called the Jersey Devil, and the ghost of a Black doctor who was lynched, a ghostly white stag, and the wandering spirits of workers from the old mills are all said to haunt the area.

New Mexico -

The Kimo Theater in Albuquerque was built in 1927 and it's a famous landmark, though it's also haunted by the ghost of a young boy named Bobby. The boy is said to have died in the Kimo in 1951, when a boiler exploded in the basement.

New York -

The Rolling Hills Asylum in East Bethany was originally known as the Genesee County Poor Farm. The Farm worked as a shelter for orphans, widows, disabled people, and even criminals. It's estimated that over 1,700 people have died in there. Notable ghosts include a man with gigantism and a satanic nurse.

North Carolina -

The Brown Mountain lights remain the most famous paranormal phenomenon in the state. Mysterious lights have been reported on or near Brown Mountain in the Pisgah National Forest. Some say they are the spirits of Native American women searching for the souls of men who had perished in battle.

North Dakota -

The Totten Trail Historic Inn in Fort Totten was built sometime between 1867 and 1873. It served as both living quarters for military officers, and as a boarding school for Native American children. Many of those children died on the grounds, and their ghosts are said to haunt the spot to this day.

Ohio -

The buildings known as The Ridges in Athens, Ohio, are now owned by the Ohio University. But The Ridges were previously the Athens Lunatic Asylum. It is said to be haunted by the ghosts of shackled patients, many of which suffered with archaic mental therapies and experiments back then.

Oklahoma -

The Stone Lion Inn in Guthrie is the most haunted place in Oklahoma. It was originally a family house, and before it was turned into an inn in the '80s, it functioned as a funeral home in the 1920s. It's not difficult to imagine why the place is haunted. One of its famous ghosts is that of Augusta Houghton, who died of whooping cough.

Oregon -

This ruin, known as the Witch's Castle, can be found in Portland. Former owner Danford Balch killed a man who fell for his daughters. Balch was then executed for the crime. The spirits of the two men are said to haunt the spot.

Pennsylvania -

It is estimated that around 50,000 men died or were severely injured in the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863. A number of restless spirits, including that of General Isaac Ewell, are said to roam the Daniel Lady Farm area, which was a Confederate field hospital where thousands died.

Rhode Island -

The Farm on Round Top Road was previously known as the Arnold Estate. This is where the ghost of 19th-century satanist Bathsheba Sherman made the lives of the Perron family hell in the 1970s. The house now goes by the name "The Conjuring House," as it was the inspiration for the 2013 film with the same name.

South Carolina -

Battery Park and White Point Garden in Charleston are nice enough places, except the area is also haunted by numerous pirates who were hanged there. Screams and apparitions of bodies swinging from the trees are still reported to this day.

South Dakota -

Hotel Alex Johnson in Rapid City dates back to the 1920s. A number of unsolved deaths are believed to be the reason why the hotel is haunted. Famous ghosts include former owner Alex Johnson, a little girl who is said to knock on doors, and the Lady in White, who was a bride that died on her wedding night.

Tennessee -

Paranormal activity at Bell Witch Cave was first experienced in 1817 by John Bell and his family. Weird sounds and animals started appearing in their cabin and nearby cave in Adams, Tennessee. The spot is believed to be haunted by the witch of old Kate Batts, AKA the Bell Witch.

The Driskill Hotel in Austin is the most haunted place in the Lone Star state. Notable ghosts include former owner Jesse Driskill, a woman who killed herself in room 329, and even Lyndon and Lady Bird Johnson.

Utah -

The Old Tooele Hospital is now known as Asylum 49, and it's a haunted attraction in Tooele, Utah. Originally, it was the home of man named Samuel F. Lee, and then it became a hospital where, of course, lots of people died. Ghosts are said to haunt the place, including that of old patients and of Lee himself, as well as his son, Thomas.

Vermont -

This bridge on Covered Bridge Road, in Stowe, is Vermont's most haunted location. The bridge is also known as Emily's Bridge, as according to one version of a story, a teenage girl took her own life there in the 1920s. From a woman's voice to orbs and strange lights, a wide range of paranormal activity has been reported.

Virginia -

Before becoming a mental institution, the St. Albans Sanatorium in Radford, was built as a Lutheran boys' school. Until it closed in the 1990s, various "treatments" were conducted there, including electroconvulsive therapy and lobotomies. Visitors have reported paranormal activity, including apparitions and floating objects.

Washington -

Kells Irish Restaurant and Pub is located in the basement of the Butterworth Building in Seattle, which was Seattle's first mortuary. Numerous ghost have been reported as well as ghostly activity such as glasses sliding off the bar or mirrors shattering for no reason.

West Virginia -

The Lake Shawnee Amusement Park in Princeton really is a spooky place. The park closed in 1966, following the accidental death of a couple of children. It did open again in the '80s, but then closed down for good. It turns out the park had been built over a burial site of the local Shawnee tribe. The ghosts of the deceased children are said to roam the park.

Wisconsin -

The ruins of Summerwind, formerly known as Lamont Mansion, can be found on the shores of West Bay Lake in Vilas County, Wisconsin. Apparitions, and other paranormal activity have been reported since 1918. The house burned down in 1988, but it remains the state's most haunted spot.

Wyoming -

The Wyoming Frontier Prison can be found in Rawlings, Wyoming. It closed its doors in 1981, but while it was in operation, many inmates were tortured and killed in there. Paranormal activity, including voices and dark figures have been reported. Activity is particularly strong in the showers, solitary confinement cells, chapel, and gas chamber.
