Three people were killed in a shooting outside a Target store in Austin, Texas, on August 11, police said. Officers responded to reports of gunfire at the location on Research Boulevard at about 2:15 pm local time, where they found three people with fatal gunshot wounds.
The suspect, a 32-year-old man, allegedly stole a car from the store's parking lot before fleeing the scene. According to police, the suspect later crashed the stolen vehicle and hijacked another car from a nearby dealership, but was eventually located in the southern part of the city. He was taken into custody. Authorities said the investigation is ongoing.
Mass shootings remain a painful and recurring part of American history. Despite decades of debate, a lack of comprehensive gun control legislation means such tragedies continue to occur. Carried out increasingly by young men who also often suffer from serious mental health or substance abuse problems, these attacks continue to plague the country.
