A five-year-old boy died after accidentally shooting himself inside an apartment in Kenwood, Chicago, on August 17, police have confirmed.

The incident happened around 1:17 pm local time. The boy, who had just started kindergarten the week prior, suffered a gunshot wound to the head. He was rushed to Comer Children’s Hospital in critical condition, and later died. A firearm was recovered at the scene, and no arrests have been made.

Since 2020, gun violence has been the leading cause of death among children and teenagers in the US, surpassing car accidents and illnesses like cancer.
