Czech environmental NGO Arnika, working with the EU‑funded ToxFree LIFE for All project, tested 81 headphone models, including products from major brands like Apple, Samsung, and Sony, and found traces of harmful substances in every type examined.

The hormone-disrupting chemicals, such as bisphenols and phthalates, received a “red” rating for concerning chemical levels, though only 11% had hazardous materials in parts that touch the skin.

While researchers say the devices do not pose an immediate danger, they warn that long‑term exposure could carry health risks, especially for frequent users, including children.

Some children’s models, including one sold on Temu, exceeded EU phthalate limits by nearly five times. Following the report, several European retailers reportedly removed certain models from sale.

Public health experts estimate that around 14% of deaths tied to cardiovascular disease among those aged 55 to 64 may be tied to an exposure to the chemical phthalate. Phthalate is a group of chemicals found in common household plastics that make the plastic more flexible.
