A student opened fire on two classmates before shooting himself at Evergreen High School in suburban Denver, Colorado, on September 10, authorities said. The gunman later died.

The incident occurred at around 12:30 pm local time, with shots fired inside and outside the school building. Both victims were hospitalized; one remains in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries.

Jefferson County deputies said more than 100 officers responded within minutes. Parents gathered nearby to reunite with their children, as residents sheltered fleeing students.

Since 2020, gun violence has been the leading cause of death among US children and teenagers, surpassing car accidents and cancer. Schools now experience gunfire nearly twice a week on average, according to advocacy group Everytown.
