The objective is to combine man-made structures with the natural environment. Put more simply, it's the development and decorative creation of greenspace. The discipline evolved out of the 17th century and the formal garden style associated with the stately homes of European royalty. By the 19th century, some of the greatest country and urban parks we know today were being created by celebrated pioneers of the profession. To describe landscape architecture now is to include anything from airports to scenic walkways. So, how did this unique architectural field grow, and who can we thank for planting its foundations?
