A major wildfire broke out on July 22 near the southern Greek city of Corinth, prompting the evacuation of several villages as crews battled intense flames under extreme heat. More than 180 firefighters, supported by 15 aircraft and 12 helicopters, were deployed to contain the blaze in a pine forest in the mountainous region, authorities said. No injuries have been reported so far.

The fire comes amid soaring summer temperatures nearing 40°C (104°F), which have complicated firefighting efforts across the country. Greece faces frequent wildfires during its hot, dry summers and has already responded to dozens of incidents this year.

Throughout history, there have been many events that led to mass evacuations. The reasons for people leaving their homes and fleeing vary, but such extreme measures are usually deployed in the face of a natural disaster or a man-made event such as war. In this gallery, we take you on a journey through the most significant mass evacuations that have ever occurred. Click on and get to know all about them.
