Current affairs

Palestinians are fleeing neighborhoods in Gaza City as Israel launches the first stages of a long-anticipated ground offensive, officials said. Israeli forces have established positions on the city’s outskirts following days of heavy airstrikes and artillery fire, signaling their intent to press ahead with plans to capture Gaza’s largest urban center, home to more than a million people.

The operation, described by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as key to dismantling Hamas strongholds, involves calling up 60,000 reservists and extending the service of 20,000 more troops. The escalation has drawn mounting criticism at home and abroad, with warnings that it could worsen Gaza’s humanitarian crisis, deepen widespread hunger, and endanger hostages still held in the territory.

Since the atrocities of the Israel-Hamas War commenced of October 7, 2023, the conflict shows no sign of being resolved. It's a moment for reflection, and certainly a time as good as any to look back over the timeline of this dreadful war and the key events that have so far shaped the ongoing conflict.
