The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced that drugmakers have recalled almost 600,000 bottles of prazosin hydrochloride due to the possibility of them containing cancer-causing nitrosamine impurities.
Two of the firms involved are Teva Pharmaceuticals USA and Amerisource Health Services. The recall started on October 16.
The medicine is used to lower blood pressure, treat post-traumatic stress disorder, and reduce sleeping problems.
While product recalls are routine (cars, for example, have been pulled from the market since as early as 1973), the scale and nature of this case underscore the importance of swift regulatory action and consumer vigilance.
