On August 19, Walmart issued a recall of select frozen shrimp products sold under its Great Value label in the US after the FDA detected radioactive contamination in a seafood shipment. But although one sample of breaded shrimp tested positive for a dangerous isotope, officials confirmed it did not enter US commerce. Nonetheless, as a precaution, consumers in 13 states are urged to discard shrimp from three affected batches purchased recently, due to potential exposure during transport.
A recall is a request from a manufacturer to return a product after the discovery of safety issues or product defects that might endanger the consumer or put the maker/seller at risk of legal action. And the practice is nothing new. Cars, for example, were being withdrawn from the market as early as 1973 in order for modifications to be carried out. Since then, thousands of different products have been subject to withdrawal, and even outright bans.
