On July 29, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a law allowing citizens over the age of 60 to voluntarily join the armed forces, as the country continues to face recruitment challenges more than three years into the full-scale Russian invasion. The move reflects the growing strain on Ukraine’s military resources as the war shows no signs of ending.

The update came just hours after a deadly Russian airstrike on a prison near Zaporizhzhia killed at least 16 inmates and injured 35 others. Ukrainian officials have called it a war crime, stating that the attack used glide bombs.

In April 2014, Russia-backed separatists seized control of several Ukrainian towns, shortly after Russia annexed Crimea in the months of February-March 2014. Then, in early 2022, Russia amassed troops along the Ukrainian border, leading to the full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022.
