A US immigration detention center has reached full capacity with 47,600 detainees, according to a senior ICE official on a call with reporters on March 12. The official, speaking anonymously, added that the Trump administration is pushing for more bed space.

ICE is funded to house an average of 41,500 detainees per detention center, and is working to increase its bed count with assistance from the US Defense Department, US Marshals Service, and the Bureau of Prisons to address the overcrowding.

This challenge is part of a broader global context where immigration policies play a critical role in national economies. Immigration is defined as the process people go through to live permanently in a foreign country. Economically, immigration can be beneficial to both the receiving and sending countries, and some development economists argue that reducing labor mobility barriers between developing and developed countries would be one of the most efficient tools for poverty reduction.

Every country, from the largest to the smallest, has an immigration policy. In some countries, the process is fairly easy, while in others, it is much more difficult and can take up to 30 years.
