China is deploying one of its largest maritime forces in years, with more than 100 naval and coast guard ships operating across East Asian waters, this according to regional security officials and intelligence reports. The vessels are spread from the Yellow Sea to the disputed South China Sea, and even into the Pacific—despite no official declaration of large-scale drills.

The military surge comes as diplomatic friction intensifies after Japan’s prime minister warned on November 23 that any Chinese attack on Taiwan could draw a military response from Tokyo. Beijing has also criticized Taiwan’s announcement of an additional $40 billion in defense spending to counter Chinese threats.

Taiwan’s government insists it has full, real-time awareness of activity in nearby waters and says its national security remains secure. Officials in Taipei say they’re working with international partners to deter any unilateral actions that could destabilize the region.

Tensions remain high in global seas with rising conflict between nations. Maritime borders have become hot spots for political standoffs, leaving many to wonder how close the world is to a broader crisis at sea. Curious about escalating threats to global peace?
