The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall of five million above-ground pools that use compression straps. The straps can be used by young children to access the pool without supervision, which has led to a number of tragedies.
The recall came following warnings about ladders, which should always be taken away when the pool isn't being watched. However, as the straps can be used as an improvised ladder, the CPSC is now recalling pools that are 48-inches (122 centimeters) in height or above.
Since 2007, nine children between the ages of 22 months and three years old have drowned after gaining access to the pools via the footholds. Another two non-fatal accidents were reported before the CSPC took action in July.
