At least 68 African migrants have died and more than 70 are still missing after their overcrowded vessel capsized off the coast of Yemen on August 3. The boat, carrying 154 Ethiopian nationals, sank in the Gulf of Aden near Yemen’s southern Abyan province.

The bodies of 54 migrants were found on the shore in Khanfar, while 14 others were recovered and taken to a hospital morgue in the coastal city of Zinjibar. Only 12 people survived. The UN’s International Organization for Migration (IOM) has called it one of the deadliest incidents in the region in recent months.

Despite civil war and instability, Yemen remains a major migration corridor for those fleeing poverty and conflict in the Horn of Africa, hoping to reach wealthy Gulf nations. These routes, marked by trafficking and extreme risk, continue to claim lives.

Global migration routes reveal the scale and complexity of movement across continents, with millions fleeing poverty, violence, and political unrest.
