Deportation

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has deported nearly 200,000 individuals in the first seven months of President Donald Trump’s second term, placing the agency on track for its highest annual removal rate in over a decade. According to CNN, this is the agency record in deportations since 2014 under President Barack Obama, when around 316,000 people were removed from the US.

Combined with deportations by Customs and Border Protection, the Coast Guard, and self-deportations, the administration has recorded nearly 350,000 removals since January 2025. Despite the uptick, ICE remains short of the White House’s stated goal of one million deportations annually, with interior arrests still below target levels.

The administration has expanded immigration enforcement through multiple federal agencies and is preparing a major funding increase for ICE, totaling nearly $75 billion through 2029.

Setting aside ideological beliefs, what are the actual implications of mass deportations on the US economy, and what is their potential impact?
