Skywatchers are in for a treat as two annual meteor showers begin this week. The Perseids, widely regarded as the most popular meteor shower of the year, will be active from July 17 to August 23, with peak activity expected overnight on August 12–13. Furthermore, the Southern Delta Aquariids will run from July 18 to August 12, reaching their peak on the night of July 28–29, just after a close post-sunset alignment of the crescent moon and Mars.
Both showers promise dozens of shooting stars under the right conditions. NASA recommends heading far from city lights to maximize visibility. A dark, open sky and a little patience are key. Also, be sure to avoid looking at your phone, as its light can impair your night vision. Checking the weather forecast ahead of time is also crucial for a successful night under the stars.
