The attempted murder of Malala Yousafzai in 2012 by a Taliban gunman resulted in the schoolgirl from Pakistan becoming one of the world's most recognized advocates for female education and human rights. Malala's tireless campaign to create a society where all girls can learn and lead earned her a Nobel Peace Prize at 17 years old—the youngest Nobel Prize laureate in history.
Her advocacy has grown into an international movement and she continues her campaign through the Malala Fund. Indeed as recently as January 2025, Malala was urging those who support the right for females to receive proper schooling to demonstrate "true leadership" by resisting curbs on women and girls' education.
