Donald Trump has ordered the construction of a detention center at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base in Cuba to house up to 30,000 migrants. The US president said the facility would be separate from the base's high-security military prison, and would house "the worst criminal illegal aliens threatening the American people."
The base has long been used to detain immigrants, a practice that has been criticized by some human rights groups. But the proposed move has stoked dark memories of when Guantanamo Bay was mired in controversy after the detention of "enemy combatants" in the wake of the September 11 terrorist attacks.
Guantanamo's history is long and complex, with the naval base itself born out of conflict. Trump's proposal is set to once again put this military station under the spotlight.
