In the United States, a community of just under 401,000 truly live in accordance with tradition, rejecting modernities such as electricity and automobiles. The Amish are a Christian group originating from the Old Order Amish Mennonite Church, a European religious movement from the 17th century. Every day life for the Amish is ruled by a specific set of behaviors called the "Ordnung." Members who do not adhere to this set of rules are shunned from the community and excommunicated.

The Amish have settlements in 32 states in the US, but have particularly high concentrations in six US states. Due to high birth rates, the Amish population is set to continue growing. Get to know more about the Amish, their way of life, and where they live by clicking through the gallery.
