At least 10 people have died and 15 others were injured following a landslide triggered by heavy rains in the city of Bello, part of the Medellín metropolitan area in northwest Colombia, the governor of Antioquia province confirmed on June 25.
The downpour began on the night of June 24, unleashing a torrent of water and mud from the surrounding mountains. Emergency crews are still working to locate survivors and assess the full extent of the damage.
Landslides often occur in areas that are considered geologically vulnerable. Steep slopes and heavy rain are two major contributing factors to landslides, but there are other factors at play.
