More than 130 million people across most of the US, from Texas to Maine, are under extreme heat alerts as dangerous conditions persist. Heat index values are forecast to reach 108–116°F (42–47°C) in the Southeast coast and upper Midwest, with Northeast cities also bracing for triple-digit real-feel temperatures. Overnight relief is minimal. Advisories continue through midweek, with flash-flood risks emerging in the Midwest.

Hurricanes, tsunamis, tornadoes, floods, and landslides are all natural phenomena that may come to our minds when we think of weather-related tragedies, but none of them tops the list. The primary weather-related cause of death is actually extreme heat. Temperatures continue to rise, and climate change remains an increasingly dangerous threat to human life.
