Reading

Global reading rates have seen a steady decline, with some countries reporting alarmingly low engagement, averaging just two to four books per person each year. A range of factors contribute to this trend, including years of wars, economic instability, poor infrastructure, and underfunded education systems. In many places, reading is viewed mainly as a tool for academic success or employment, rather than a lifelong habit.

Access to books remains limited in rural and low-income regions, and local publishing industries often struggle to thrive. Digital distractions and low literacy quality make things even worse. Several countries across Africa, Asia, and the Middle East now rank among the lowest in global reading averages.
